LAST WEEK'S OFFER OF FREE COPIES OF "IMMUNIZATION PLUS" IS OVER
Due to an overwhelming response from our subscribers, the middle school curriculum
resource "Immunization Plus" is no longer available from the Immunization Action
Coalition (IAC). Within 24 hours of publishing last week's e-mail announcement about this
free resource, our entire supply of "Immunization Plus" was depleted by requests
we received from all over the country.
We are pleased that this resource received such a big response, but because of this
deluge, we will only be able to fill the requests of the first 120 individuals who
responded and indicated that they work or provide services in school settings. We
apologize to those of you who will not receive a copy. Thank you for your interest.
Please watch for future resource "giveaways" like this one. IAC will be
publishing additional announcements about free resources in upcoming months.

CDC RELEASES PUBLIC HEALTH DISPATCH ON POTENTIAL HEPATITIS A EXPOSURE
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a report entitled
"Public Health Dispatch: Potential Hepatitis A Exposure Among Interstate 95 Travelers
-- North Carolina, 1999," in the August 20, 1999, issue of the MMWR. The dispatch
reads:
"North Carolina health officials are advising persons who dined at the Texas
Steakhouse in Smithfield (Johnston County), North Carolina, near Interstate 95 (exit 95)
on July 24, July 25, July 26, July 31, August 1, August 2, August 7, or August 8 after 3
p.m. that they may have been exposed to hepatitis A. A worker at the restaurant during
those times has had hepatitis A infection diagnosed. Potentially 3000 diners could have
been exposed when the infected person was working.
"Although local health officials think that many diners were from the
Smithfield/Johnston County area, many of the exposed persons may be from other areas,
particularly along the eastern seaboard. Additional information is available from the
Johnston County Health Department, telephone (919) 989-5200."

CDC PUBLISHES GUIDELINES FOR THE PREVENTION OF OPPORTUNISTIC INFECTIONS FOR PERSONS
WITH HIV
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
published "1999 USPHS/IDSA Guidelines for the Prevention of Opportunistic Infections
in Persons Infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus" on August 20, 1999. An
appendix, "Recommendations to Help Patients Avoid Exposure to Opportunistic
Pathogens," is also included.
The report covers many aspects of potential risk such as
travel, sex, drug use, and even pet ownership. Immunization recommendations are covered in
several tables and sections including "Bacterial Respiratory Infections,"
"Varicella-Zoster Virus Infection," and "Hepatitis C." There is
also immunization information in the "Travel" section of the appendix. The table
entitled "Immunization Schedule for HIV-Infected Children" is Table 10.
