CDC RELEASES NEW ACIP STATEMENT ON MEASLES, MUMPS, AND RUBELLA

CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) released its new statement, "Measles, Mumps, and Rubella - Vaccine Use and Strategies for Elimination of Measles, Rubella, and Congenital Rubella Syndrome and Control of Mumps," published in the MMWR's "Recommendations and Reports," dated May 22, 1998. This statement became available on the Internet on June 15, 1998. This statement supersedes previous ACIP recommendations on this
topic published in 1989 and 1990. Some of the specific new recommendations in this statement include the following: elimination of egg allergy as a contraindication to administering MMR vaccine; change in the recommended timing of the two doses of MMR to 12-15 months for the first dose and 4-6 years of age for the second dose; a recommendation that all persons who work in health-care facilities have acceptable evidence of measles and rubella immunity;  clarification of the role of serologic screening to determine immunity; modification of the definition of rubella immunity; and much more.  To obtain an electronic copy of this statement in the mail, send an e-mail request to the National Immunization Program and ask for this publication by name. The address is nipinfo@cdc.gov or click here: mailto:nipinfo@cdc.gov. You may also call your state health department immunization program and request a copy. To obtain
