PARTICIPATE IN THE "HEALTHY PEOPLE 2000" SATELLITE MEETING IN DECEMBER
David Satcher, MD, PhD, U.S. Surgeon General and Assistant Secretary, Public Health and Science, Department of Health
and Human Services, invites all interested parties to join him for a satellite broadcast on Wednesday,
December 1, 1999, entitled "Healthy People 2000 Progress Review: Immunization and Infectious Diseases." The primary objectives
of this meeting are to 1) assess progress made in achieving the "Healthy People 2000"
objectives for immunization and infectious diseases, 2) highlight effective programs, and 3)
learn how to translate the "Healthy People 2000" national objectives into local action.
Dr. Satcher will be joined by a panel of experts who will respond to participants' questions. The target audience
includes state and local public health officials, health care providers and students, professionals and students
of public health, health educators, consumer advocates, and others involved in policy development.
The broadcast is scheduled from 2-4 pm ET. Sponsors include the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health,
the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and
the Public Health Training Network.

READY TO DOWNLOAD! SERBO-CROATIAN VISs NOW AVAILABLE ON IAC'S WEBSITE
Eight Vaccine Information Statements (VISs) in the Serbo-Croatian language are now available on the
Immunization Action Coalition's (IAC) website including statements for varicella, DTP, hib, hepatitis B, hepatitis
A, MMR, polio, and tetanus vaccines. These translations were graciously provided by
the Indiana Department of Health and the California Department of Health Services,
Immunization Branch.

CDC PUBLISHES ARTICLE ON PROGRESS TOWARD POLIO ERADICATION IN NEPAL
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published "Progress Toward Poliomyelitis Eradication --
Nepal, 1996-1999" in the October 22, 1999, issue of the MMWR. The "Editorial Note" reads in part:
"Nepal is a geographic buffer between India, the world's largest reservoir for
poliovirus, and China, which has been polio-free since 1995. During 1998, 85% of the
world's polioviruses were isolated from polio cases in India; Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, two large Indian states
on Nepal's southern border, accounted for 54% of India's polioviruses isolated.
"...Fewer than 440 days remain to reach the target for global polio eradication
by the end of 2000. Substantial and rapid improvement in NIDs (National Immunization Days)
and AFP (Acute Flaccid Paralysis) surveillance has brought Nepal closer to the goal of eradication.
Priorities for polio eradication in Nepal in 1999 and 2000 include 1) execution of high-quality NIDs
and supplemental vaccination campaigns targeting high risk areas and populations
(five monthly rounds will be synchronized with India during November 1999-March
2000); 2) maintenance of sensitive AFP surveillance, especially in the densely populated districts bordering
India; and 3) improving routine OPV3 coverage."

YEAR 2000 IMMUNIZATION REGISTRY CONFERENCE IS SET FOR MARCH, 2000, IN RHODE ISLAND
The National Immunization Program (NIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is sponsoring the 2000
Immunization Registry Conference scheduled for March 27-29, 2000, in Newport, Rhode Island. This
conference will bring together both government (State, Federal, and local) and
private sector health care partners to share knowledge and experiences regarding the development and utilization of
immunization registries. The "early bird" registration deadline is February 11, 2000.
Before this date, registration costs $100, after this date, the fee increases to $125. On-site

REGISTER NOW! TROPICAL MEDICINE CONFERENCE IS COMING IN NOVEMBER
"Travel-Related Vaccine Preventable Illnesses" is the title of a tropical medicine conference scheduled for November
27-28, 1999, in Washington, DC. The course will consider the use, indications, adverse events, efficacy,
and cost effectiveness of vaccines such as those used to protect against hepatitis A & B, Japanese encephalitis, yellow
fever, rabies, typhoid, meningococcal disease, anthrax, and plague, among others.
