WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT! "LIVER CANCER PREVENTION AMONG ASIAN PACIFIC ISLANDER POPULATIONS: GETTING SHOTS INTO
ARMS, A PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY!"
Next week, the National Task Force on Hepatitis B Among Asian Pacific Islanders is sponsoring a workshop titled
"Liver Cancer Prevention Among Asian Pacific Islander Populations: Getting Shots Into Arms, a Public Health
Emergency!" at the 7th Biennial Symposium on Minorities, the Medically Underserved and Cancer. The upcoming
conference is set for February 9-13 at the Grand Hyatt Washington in Washington, DC. The Task Force workshop
is scheduled for Saturday, February 12th, from 7:30 - 8:45 am.
Topics to be covered in the Task Force workshop include the epidemiology of hepatitis B and liver cancer,
information about national and state programs to prevent liver cancer, and more details on how to become involved
with the work of the Task Force.
The Biennial Symposium is a follow up to a 1999 report by the Institute of Medicine titled "The Unequal Burden
of Cancer: An Assessment of NIH Research and Programs for Ethnic Minorities and the Medically
Underserved." Leading cancer and community experts from academia, federal and state governments, clinicians, researchers,
public health professionals, survivors and advocates will attend.

CALIFORNIA'S VACCINE UPDATE SATELLITE BROADCAST SET FOR FEBRUARY 24TH
"California's New Vaccine Issues and Your Practice" is a live, interactive satellite broadcast for health
professionals who want to know more about California's vaccine issues and best practices to improve immunization
levels in the private sector.
Sponsored by the California Department of Health Services and the County of San Diego Health and
Human Services Agency, the program is set for February 24th from 12 noon - 1:30 pm, Pacific Time. The course
will specifically cover the new California school entry requirements for varicella,
the California-specific recommendations for hepatitis A and B vaccines, as well
as for the new pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. Other points of discussion will include immunization practice
assessment, reminder/recall systems, patient outreach, registry participation, and parent record keeping.
The conference is directed to pediatricians, family physicians, nurses, school
nurses, medical directors of health organizations, public health department staff,
as well as staff of community, rural and Indian health clinics. Faculty consist of William Atkinson, MD, MPH;
Sandy Ross, RN, PHN; Mark Sawyer, MD; and Natalie Smith, MD, MPH.
CME and CEU credit will be available for participation in this program. For more information, including

IAC NOW PROMOTES STATE IMMUNIZATION CONFERENCES VIA IAC EXPRESS
The Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) has begun to promote state immunization conferences on its e-mail
immunization news service, IAC EXPRESS. Several health departments and immunization organizations have
approached us to provide our subscribers with notice of upcoming events. We are happy to report that now we can oblige!
IAC will accept notices of statewide conferences related
to immunization and/or hepatitis B treatment issues. In turn, we will publish the information you
provide on IAC EXPRESS, a service which now reaches almost 10,000 health professionals nationwide. If you would like us to
promote your conference, please submit the conference title, topics covered, intended audience, learning
objectives (if applicable), and detailed contact information regarding registration options. Whenever
possible, please send the original promotional materials for the event.
