CDC ANNOUNCES OPENING FOR DIRECTOR OF IMMUNIZATION SERVICES DIVISION AT THE NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION PROGRAM
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on February 3, 2000, that it is seeking a
Director for the Immunization Services Division (ISD) of the National Immunization Program (NIP) in Atlanta,
GA. ISD consists of five branches with approximately 180 employees and has a budget
of approximately $850 million.
This position will provide leadership in providing technical and administrative
assistance to State and local health departments and other organizations in
the implementation of immunization programs; implementing the Vaccines for Children Program and
ensuring appropriate management of the Federal vaccine contracts; and conducting operations research
demonstration projects designed to test different hypotheses and various interventions to
improve vaccine coverage among specific target groups.
This position may be of interest to individuals who hold specific degrees, as
well as those who possess unique experience in certain areas. CDC is looking
for candidates with the right combination of traits to direct this program: leadership ability, creativity,
motivation, policy development skills, and devotion to the principles of public health practice.

CDC OFFERS WEBSITE ON NEEDLE-FREE INJECTION TECHNOLOGY
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed an excellent website on needle-free injection
technology. The site includes a bibliography of related scientific literature; a listing of the needle-free
injection policies of the World Health Organization (WHO), CDC, and the U.S.
Department of Defense; and information about manufacturers and devices.

CDC PUBLISHES SUPPLEMENT ON GLOBAL DISEASE ELIMINATION AND ERADICATION
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a document titled "Global Disease Elimination
and Eradication as Public Health Strategies" in an MMWR supplement dated December 31, 1999.
This 216-page publication is a supplement to the "Bulletin of the World Health
Organization" and is a reprint of the proceedings of the "Conference on Global Disease Elimination
and Eradication as Public Health Strategies" that took place in Atlanta, GA, in February 1998. Two of the
conference papers published in this supplement are "Perspectives from the Global Poliomyelitis
Eradication Initiative" and "Measles Eradication: Experience in the Americas."

FEBRUARY 11TH IS THE "EARLY BIRD" REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR THE YEAR 2000 IMMUNIZATION REGISTRY CONFERENCE
February 11th is the last day to register at a discounted rate for the 2000 Immunization Registry Conference set
for March 27-29, in Newport, Rhode Island. Sponsored by the National Immunization Program (NIP) of the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, this conference will bring together both government (State, Federal, and
local) and private sector health care partners to share knowledge and experiences regarding the development
and utilization of immunization registries.
The "early bird" registration deadline is February 11th. Registration costs $100 on or before this date. After
this date, the fee increases to $125. On-site registration is $150. For more information on registration,

REMEMBERING LINDA: IAC'S OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9TH
The office of the Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) will be closed on Wednesday, February 9th, so that IAC staff may
attend the funeral of Linda Boerger-Johnson, IAC's office manager and friend. Linda died on Saturday,
February 5th, after a five-year journey with breast cancer. She will be greatly
missed by all who were privileged to know her.
IAC's office will reopen on Thursday, February 10th.
