YEAR 2000 NATIONAL INFANT IMMUNIZATION WEEK PLANNED FOR APRIL 16-22

"You Gave Them Life, Protect It" will continue to be the message of this year's National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW), set for April 16-22, 2000. According to an e-mail sent out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the NIIW national kickoff will be held in Houston, Texas, at which time a new Spanish-language public service campaign will be unveiled.

The English-language public service campaign and NIIW promotion kit will remain the same as last year and are available from CDC. NIIW kits can be requested by sending a fax to (404) 639-8555, or by visiting http://www.cdc.gov/nip/publications/niiw/index.htm Also available at this website are camera-ready versions (PDF format) of "The Community Guide" and "The Implementation Handbook," which contain activities, ideas, and sample documents that can be used during NIIW and  throughout the year to promote immunization. Users should be forewarned that the files are both in excess of 40 pages and may be difficult to download.

NOTE: You will need to make two changes to the NIIW promotion kit once you receive it from CDC. First, because rotavirus vaccine has been removed from the childhood immunization schedule, the materials in the NIIW kit that refer to the administration of rotavirus vaccine will need to be edited. In addition, last year's kit contains the 1999 childhood immunization schedule. You will need to remove the 1999 schedule and replace it with the 2000 childhood immunization schedule that is available at:
http://www.cdc.gov/nip/pdf/child-schedule.pdf
If you are unable to download this document, you can request a copy by calling CDC's National Immunization Information Hotline at (800) 232-2522.

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE WEBSITE OFFERS MILITARY IMMUNIZATION INFORMATION

The Department of Defense (DoD) website titled "The Military Immunization Information Source" provides access to current immunization program information for DoD and the military services. The website includes information on military policy statements on the use of vaccines, anthrax-specific information, military immunization tracking policies and procedures, and a table of military indications for vaccines in each branch of the services.

Because DoD immunization programs are founded on national standards for immunization practice, the site provides links to other governmental and non-governmental sites dedicated to vaccines, immunization practices, and vaccine safety.
