CDC NOW HAS A TOLL-FREE TELEPHONE NUMBER FOR ITS INTERNATIONAL TRAVELERS' INFORMATION LINE
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a new toll-free number for its International
Travelers' Information line. Callers can access recorded voice messages on diseases specific to international
travel, request a list of publications on international travel available from CDC's automated fax
information service, or order a copy of "Health Information for International
Travel" (the "Yellow Book").
The new toll-free number is (877) 394-8747 (877-FYI-TRIP). Travelers' health
information can also be obtained from the National Center for Infectious Diseases'
Travelers' Health website at: http://www.cdc.gov/travel

YEAR 2000 VIDEO ON NEW POLIO VACCINE RECOMMENDATION NOW AVAILABLE
The "New Polio Vaccine Recommendation" (2000 edition) is a 7-minute videotape designed to help parents and
health professionals understand the 2000 Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendation
that only an injectable all-inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) be used for vaccination. Produced by Michigan State
University in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Community Health, the videotape describes polio
disease trends, explains why the recommendation has changed, and presents the new polio vaccine schedule. A previous
version of this video won the 1999 American Academy of Pediatrics Lay Education Project Award.
The video is available from Michigan State University for $10 (including shipping and handling). Fax your

NOTE: MSUHPP also has available copies of "Varicella Vaccine: A Giant Step Towards Disease Prevention" (1998
edition). This 16-minute video describes chickenpox, its complications, who is at risk for the disease, how
the chickenpox vaccine works, and for whom it is recommended. Videotapes are free to Michigan health professionals, and
are $15 a copy (shipping and handling included) for those outside of Michigan. They are available from
MSUHPP by fax or phone at the numbers given above.

NCAI OFFERS FREE BOOKLET ON SUCCESSFUL VACCINATION PROGRAMS
The National Coalition for Adult Immunization (NCAI) has published "Model Programs Initiative Guide:
Immunization Coalitions Striving for Excellence," designed to aid state and local coalitions in building
and sustaining their coalition efforts. The guide profiles 22 Model Programs Initiative (MPI)
participants, and includes a resource section, bibliography, fact sheets, and
more.

APIC CONFERENCE SET FOR JUNE 18-22 IN MINNEAPOLIS
The 27th Annual Educational Conference and International Meeting of the Association for Professionals in Infection
Control and Epidemiology (APIC) will be held June 18-22, 2000, in Minneapolis, MN. This conference will
include formal presentations, poster sessions, and small group forums that provide practical information about infection
control and clinical epidemiology.

NATIONAL ARMY RESEARCH INSTITUTE SYMPOSIUM SET FOR MAY 3-5 IN BETHESDA
The 6th National Symposium: Basic Aspects of Vaccines will be held at the Uniformed Services University of
the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD, on May 3-5, 2000. This symposium is sponsored by the Walter Reed Army
Institute of Research (WRAIR) and is intended to provide a broad-based, interactive forum for discussion of
current issues in basic immunology and vaccinology.
