AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS ARTICLES ON ADOLESCENT IMMUNIZATION AND MENINGOCOCCAL DISEASE AND COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE

Recent issues of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) newsletter "AAP News" have included timely articles on adolescent immunization.

ACELLULAR PERTUSSIS VACCINE CONFERENCE TO BE HELD NOVEMBER 12-14, 2000, IN BETHESDA, MD.

An acellular pertussis vaccine conference will be held November 12-14, 2000, at the Hyatt Regency Bethesda in Bethesda, Md.

The event is sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Vaccine Program Office. Directed primarily toward epidemiologists, clinicians, pediatricians, health policy makers, and pertussologists, it covers topics such as surveillance, epidemiology, and laboratory issues; post-licensure clinical experience in infants; safety data; policy discussion; clinical issues; and adult and adolescent clinical trials.

WORKSHOP WEBCAST OF "EVALUATION OF NEW VACCINES: HOW MUCH SAFETY DATA?" SET FOR NOVEMBER 14-15, 2000

Mark your calendar for the November 14-15, 2000, webcast of the upcoming workshop "Evaluation of New Vaccines: How Much Safety Data?"

Seating capacity at the workshop has been exceeded and registration is closed, but the entire workshop will be webcast live on November 14 from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. and on November 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

This two-day workshop will explore:

  • the evolution of new vaccine evaluation
  • current approaches to post-marketing safety evaluation
  • alternatives for enhancing post-marketing safety evaluation
  • the value and feasibility of larger prelicensure trials

MARK YOUR CALENDAR! CDC SATELLITE TRAINING "SURVEILLANCE OF VACCINE-PREVENTABLE DISEASE" SCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER 8, 2000

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will offer the video conference "Surveillance of Vaccine-Preventable Disease" on December 8, 2000. The broadcast will air from 12 to 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

The program will be presented by medical epidemiologist William Atkinson, MD, MPH, and Melinda Wharton, MD, chief of the Child Vaccine-Preventable Disease Branch, both from CDC's National Immunization Program. The program will provide guidelines for vaccine-preventable disease surveillance, case investigation, and outbreak control.

The course is designed for nurses, physicians, epidemiologists, sanitarians, infection control practitioners, laboratorians, disease reporters, and others. Continuing education credit will be offered.

The text for the course, MANUAL FOR SURVEILLANCE OF VACCINE PREVENTABLE DISEASE, can be purchased for $20 (plus $5.50 shipping) through the Public Health Foundation online at http://bookstore.phf.org/prod99.htm or by telephone at (877) 252-1200. The manual is recommended for the course but not required.

HMONG "SCREENING QUESTIONNAIRE FOR CHILD AND TEEN IMMUNIZATION" HAS NEW DESIGN

A new design of IAC's "Screening Questionnaire for Child and Teen Immunization" is now available in Hmong. It has been redesigned to more closely match the English-language version. This one-page screening questionnaire for the patient's parent and/or guardian to fill out helps clinic staff evaluate which vaccines can be given at that day's visit.

In addition to the Hmong version, English, Spanish, and Chinese versions of the screening questionnaire are available to view and download from IAC's website.

CANADIAN NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION CONFERENCE SET FOR DECEMBER 3-6, 2000, IN HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA

The fourth annual Canadian National Immunization Conference, "Immunization in the 21st Century: Progress Through Education" will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, December 3-6, 2000.

Organized by the Laboratory Centre for Disease Control, Health Canada, and the Canadian Paediatric Society, this three-day conference will discuss myths and truths about immunization, global immunization initiatives and how they are relevant to Canada, updates on vaccines and vaccine programs, and more.

SATELLITE CONFERENCE ON BIOTERRORISM SET FOR DECEMBER 5-7, 2000

The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense presents its second annual satellite broadcast on bioterrorism, "Medical Response to Chemical Warfare and Terrorism 2000." The three-day broadcast will air December 5-7, 2000, from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

The satellite conference is tailored to health professionals and first responders who serve the military and support civil defense programs. It offers information about chemical agents and proper medical responses to intentional or accidental chemical agent exposure. Battlefield management, decontamination of casualties, and personal protective equipment are also discussed, along with antiterrorism. The program features discussions with leading scientists, researchers, clinicians, and counter-terrorism experts.

Participants may choose to view the broadcast live via satellite or video teleconference at a local downlink facility, or via Internet video streaming on their own desktops.
