CDC PUBLISHES REPORT ON INFLUENZA ACTIVITY IN THE US AND WORLDWIDE
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published an article in
the November 10, 2000, issue of the MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY WEEKLY REPORT (MMWR), titled
"Influenza Activity--United States and Worldwide, April-October 2000."
This report summarizes influenza activity in the United States and internationally. It also characterizes influenza
virus isolates analyzed by the World Health Organization's Collaborating Center for Reference and
Research on Influenza at CDC.
The Editorial Note states in part: "Recent isolates from the Northern Hemisphere have been predominantly influenza
A(H1N1) and influenza B viruses. However, surveillance information is not a reliable predictor of future
influenza activity. The type(s)/subtype(s) of influenza virus that will circulate,
the timing of onset and peaking, and the severity of the upcoming season in the Northern Hemisphere
cannot be predicted. Persons at increased risk for influenza-related complications should receive annual
influenza vaccination to reduce their chances for influenza infection and the severity of the illness
should they become infected."
Influenza surveillance data collected by CDC are updated weekly October through May and are available by calling
(888) 232-3228, or by calling (888) 232-3299 and requesting that document #361100 be faxed to you.
You can also review influenza data on the website of CDC's Influenza Branch,
at:
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/flu/weekly.htm
To view the full text of this article online, go to:

Report" (MMWR), visit CDC's MMWR website at: http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr
Select "Free MMWR Subscription" from the menu at the left of the screen. Once you have submitted the required
