CLINTON LAUNCHES NEW FEDERAL EFFORT TO INCREASE CHILDHOOD IMMUNIZATION RATES THROUGH A LINK WITH WIC
President Clinton, together with former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, announced a new federal effort to increase
immunization rates among children nationwide. Clinton issued an executive memorandum on December
11, directing the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to examine the immunization status of the 5 million children under age 5
who participate in the federal nutrition program Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Children who
are behind schedule on their immunizations and those who do not have immunization records will be referred to local health care
providers or public health clinics. Children who are uninsured receive vaccinations at no cost
under the Vaccines For Children program. Studies indicate that linking immunization services with WIC could improve
vaccination coverage by up to 40 percent within 12 months.
This memorandum also directs the USDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop a national
strategic plan to ensure more accurate and cost-effective immunization assessment, referral, and follow-up
for children at risk.

FIND RESOURCES FOR PATIENTS AND PROFESSIONALS ON THE CANADIAN IMMUNIZATION AWARENESS PROGRAM WEBSITE
Looking for immunization resources for parents as well as health professionals?
The Canadian Immunization Awareness Program (CIAP) website offers online pamphlets, articles
and reports, posters, and more. While some of the resources refer specifically to Canadian immunization guidelines,
others offer general, easy-to-understand information about vaccines and vaccine safety.
The website also has valuable links to organizations in both Canada and United
States.
The goal of the CIAP is to help parents and health care providers in Canada
work together to make sure children get all the shots they need at the right
times.

GEORGIA STATE IMMUNIZATION CONFERENCE IS SET FOR FEBRUARY 15 IN MACON
The eighth annual Immunize Georgia's Little Guys conference is set for Thursday, February 15, 2001, in Macon, Georgia,
at the Macon Centerplex Convention Center. Sponsored by Immunize Georgia's Little Guys and titled
"Georgia Immunization: From Ordinary to Extraordinary," this conference is
aimed at health professionals, corporations and community service agencies,
and child advocates. Topics include the latest vaccine recommendations, working with
patients and families from diverse backgrounds, and strategies to overcome parental fears about immunization.
To take advantage of the $25 early-bird registration fee, register by January 8,
2001. The $35 regular registration deadline is February 1, 2001.
