TOO GOOD TO MISS! HOW TO ADMINISTER IM AND SQ VACCINES TO CHILDREN AND ADULTS
The Minnesota Department of Health offers two new online charts that illustrate
how to give intramuscular (IM) and subcutaneous (SQ) injections to children and adults.
Anatomical drawings clearly show appropriate injection sites, and additional pictures illustrate proper needle
insertion angles. The charts state which vaccines should be administered IM and which should be administered
SQ, as well as the proper injection site and needle size according to the patients' ages.
Post these charts in your vaccine preparation area and make sure that every person who administers vaccines in your
practice or health facility has a personal copy.

REMINDER! NATIONAL INFANT IMMUNIZATION WEEK IS APRIL 21-28
Remember that National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) will be observed April 21-28, 2001. NIIW focuses attention on the
importance of proper immunization for infants and toddlers. Across the US, communities work
during this week to increase awareness of the benefits of infant immunization.
Many clinics offer expanded hours, and businesses and community groups typically distribute immunization information to the
public.
Check out the NIIW Kit online. This publication, produced in 2000, includes a
community guide and an implementation handbook with materials for parents, providers, and
community partners. To obtain this kit, go to: http://www.cdc.gov/nip/publications/niiw/default.htm

CDC REPORTS ON POLIO ERADICATION PROGRESS IN SUDAN
CDC published an article titled "Progress Toward Poliomyelitis and Dracunculiasis Eradication--Sudan, 1999-2000" in the April 13, 2001, issue of
"Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report" (MMWR). According to the article, "Sudan began poliomyelitis and dracunculiasis eradication
activities in 1994 and 1995, respectively, in response to resolutions by the World Health
Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO). Sudan poses special obstacles to global
eradication campaigns as a result of the disruption caused by ongoing civil war in the vast southern part of the
country. The activities of both programs are summarized in this report, which indicated that substantial
progress was made to eradicate polio and control of dracunculiasis improved slightly. Continued commitment of resources, access
to persons in areas of conflict, and a peaceful resolution of civil unrest are needed to eradicate both
diseases."
