AAP REPORTS FIND NO EVIDENCE TO LINK MMR VACCINE WITH AUTISM OR INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE
The May 2001 issue of PEDIATRICS includes two new American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reports on autism. The first is
"Measles-Mumps-Rubella Vaccine and Autistic Spectrum Disorder: Report From the New Challenges in
Childhood Immunizations Conference Convened in Oak Brook, Illinois, June 12-13, 2000" by Neal A. Halsey, MD, Susan L. Hyman, MD,
and the Conference Writing Panel. The authors, a multidisciplinary panel of
international experts, examined the evidence regarding hypothesized connections among
measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and autism spectrum disorders.
The report concludes: "Although the possible association with MMR vaccine has received much public and political
attention and there are many who have derived their own conclusions based on personal experiences, the available
evidence does not support the hypothesis that MMR vaccine causes autism or
associated disorders or IBD. Separate administration of measles, mumps, and
rubella vaccines to children provides no benefit over administration of the
combination MMR vaccine and would result in delayed or missed immunizations. Pediatricians need to work with
families to ensure that children are protected early in the second year of life from these preventable
diseases."

The second article on autism in this issue, "Technical Report: The Pediatrician's Role in the Diagnosis and
Management of Autistic Spectrum Disorder in Children" by the AAP Committee on Children with Disabilities,
offers current state-of-the-art guidance to physicians who care for children
with autism.
