VACCINE EDUCATION CENTER OFFERS VIDEO ON VACCINE SAFETY FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND PARENTS
The Vaccine Education Center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has developed a new educational video for
parents and health professionals. "Vaccines: Separating Fact from Fear," is a 27-minute video that addresses
the most common questions parents have about vaccines, dispels myths and misconceptions about vaccine safety, and illustrates the
continuing threat posed by vaccine-preventable diseases in the United States and around the
world. It includes the stories of several parents whose children suffered vaccine-preventable diseases and also provides an extensive list of
responsible Web sites.
Health professionals may request up to two copies of the video for their practice free of charge. The public can
order the video for $5 per copy. Allow four to six weeks for delivery.

IOM ANNOUNCES THAT PRINTED COPIES OF ITS REPORT ON MMR AND AUTISM ARE NOW AVAILABLE
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has announced that the final printed and bound copies of its report titled "Immunization
Safety Review: Measles-Mumps-Rubella Vaccine and Autism" is now available for purchase in paperback book form.

CORRECTION: INFLUENZA AND PNEUOCOCCAL VACCINATION DATA PROVIDED BY BRFSS
IAC EXPRESS #257 incorrectly reported that the primary data used for the article "Influenza and Pneumococcal Vaccination
Levels Among Persons Aged 65 Years and Older--United States, 1999" (MMWR, June 29, 2001) was
from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). The correct source of the data is

CIVIL SURGEONS PLEASE NOTE: THE U.S. IMMIGRATION AND NATURALIZATION SERVICE SUSPENDS Td IMMUNIZATION
REQUIREMENT FOR IMMIGRANTS DUE TO Td SHORTAGE
CDC's Division of Quarantine (DQ) has announced an automatic waiver for the Td vaccination requirements for immigrants
effective through September 30, 2001. The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) will issue
guidance for its district and local offices, using similar guidance given last
year when the influenza vaccine was delayed.
Because the INS Supplemental Form to I-693 (Adjustment of Status Applicant's Documentation of Immunization) does not
have an "unavailable in country" box for vaccines, it is necessary to write "not available" on the form.
Because some INS offices might not yet be aware of the waiver, civil surgeons who encounter problems with local
offices should contact DQ by fax at (404) 639-2599, Attention Visa Medical Activity.
At the end of September, the situation will be reevaluated, and if the Td shortage continues, the waiver period could be
extended.

CDC SEEKS PROPOSALS FOR HIV PREVENTION AMONG YOUNG MEN OF COLOR WHO HAVE SEX WITH MEN
For fiscal year 2001, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is offering funds for a cooperative
agreement program for HIV projects for community-based organizations targeting young men of color who have sex
with men (YMSM of color). CDC seeks to fund activities directly related to (1)
preventing YMSM of color (ages 24 and younger) from getting HIV or transmitting the virus to
someone else, or (2) providing intervention activities that involve preventing other sexually transmitted diseases or
substance abuse as a means of reducing or eliminating the risk of HIV transmission among
YMSM of color.
The application deadline is July 31, 2001, and funds are expected to be available in September.
