UPDATED! STATE VARICELLA IMMUNIZATION MANDATES ON IAC'S WEBSITE
Check out the website of the Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) for a newly updated table of state
varicella immunization mandates. This table offers a brief overview of which
states currently mandate varicella vaccination for what ages, and the implementation
dates for those mandates.
Missouri is the most recent state to provide IAC with varicella mandate information.
Missouri's new varicella immunity requirement for entry into daycare took effect
July 30, 2001.

CDC PUBLISHES REPORT ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CALIFORNIA'S MIDDLE SCHOOL VACCINATION LAW
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published an article titled
"Effectiveness of a Middle School Vaccination Law--California, 1999-2001," in the
August 10, 2001, issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR). The study indicates
that vaccination requirements and laws are effective in protecting young people from
vaccine-preventable diseases.
CDC, in collaboration with the Pre-Teen Health Project in
San Diego, evaluated the impact of California's middle school vaccination law, which requires students entering
seventh grade on or after July 1, 1999, to have three doses of hepatitis B vaccine and
two doses of measles-containing vaccine. The results of the analysis indicate that when
school entrance requirements are enforced, high vaccination coverage can be achieved.
The article notes that although vaccination laws are important in increasing coverage,
cooperation by the public health community in enforcing the law is essential for
successful implementation.

THE 2001-2002 EDITION OF THE YELLOW BOOK IS NOW AVAILABLE
The 2001-2002 edition of CDC's "Health Information for International Travel" also known
as The Yellow Book, is now available. Published every two years, this guidebook
contains updated vaccination information, revised disease-specific text and tables, new sections
on altitude sickness and international adoption, and improved maps and indexing.

REVISED ENGLISH VERSION AND NEW SPANISH TRANSLATION OF IAC'S PATIENT EDUCATION PIECE "IMMUNIZATIONS FOR BABIES"
IAC has a revised English version and a new Spanish translation of its handy patient
education chart "Immunizations for Babies: A Guide for Parents." This easy-to-read chart
graphically shows what vaccinations babies need and when.
The English version has been updated to remove all mention of oral polio vaccine.
