AAP RELEASES 2002 SCHEDULE FOR CHILDHOOD VACCINATIONS
The January issue of Pediatrics (vol. 109, no. 1) contains "Recommended Childhood
Immunization Schedule--United States, 2002" accompanied by a policy statement by
the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Committee on Infectious Diseases.
The schedule, issued annually in January, is approved by AAP, the Advisory Committee
on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).
As stated in a press release issued by AAP on January 7, 2002, "no major changes
have been made in the content of this year's schedule. However, this year the
recommendations are accompanied by a caveat in order to accommodate the current
national shortage of the pneumococcal vaccine." In addition, "the 2002 schedule
reaffirms and encourages the routine use of hepatitis B vaccine for all infants before
hospital discharge," listing "three important reasons" for the birth dose.
To access the schedule and policy statement in Pediatrics, go to:

FALL/WINTER EDITION OF VACCINATE ADULTS! IS NOW ON THE WEB
The Fall/Winter 2001-2002 issue of VACCINATE ADULTS! is now available on the
website of the Immunization Action Coalition. Hard copies were mailed in December.
This issue contains new information and resources that will help adult medicine
practitioners stay up to date with adult vaccination guidelines.
Don't miss the always-informative "Ask the Experts" column by William Atkinson, M.D.,
M.P.H.; Harold Margolis, M.D.; and Linda Moyer, R.N. All three are highly regarded
specialists with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
And be sure to copy and distribute the newly revised "Summary of Recommendations
for Adult Immunization." This chart summarizes the most current recommendations from
the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on everything from
schedules and routes of administration to contraindications. Some practices laminate or
make cardstock copies of this document for each examination room and hand them
out to immunization staff as a ready-reference guide.
There are several ways to access these and other VACCINATE ADULTS! features and
articles on the web.
- You can download the entire issue from the web, but the
PDF file of the issue is large (404,701 bytes) and some printers are unable to print a file of that size. For
helpful tips on downloading and printing PDF files, go to: http://www.immunize.org/nslt.d/tips.htm
If you are ready to download a PDF-format, camera-ready copy of the entire
issue, go to:

IAC OFFERS "PHOTO NOTEBOOK OF VACCINE-PREVENTABLE DISEASES": ORDER YOURS NOW TO SHARE WITH PATIENTS
For those who don't already have one, IAC's "Photo Notebook of Vaccine-Preventable
Diseases" provides a powerful visual
aid for clinic staff or community outreach workers conducting immunization presentations. A three-ring binder
holds 20 plastic-protected, 8x10" color photographs of
children and adults with vaccine-preventable diseases. Each picture is accompanied by simple text that explains
the disease portrayed. When you show your patients
pictures of people with severe varicella and other infections, they will begin to understand the seriousness
of the diseases that vaccines can prevent.
To see the photos from the Photo Notebook on our website, go to:
http://www.immunize.org/news.d/6025pix.pdf
To view the Photo Notebook cover, go to:
http://www.immunize.org/images/r2053.jpg
To order your own "Photo Notebook of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases" online (item
P2053, $75 each), go to:
http://www.immunize.org/photobook/
The images also can be downloaded for free from IAC's website at: http://www.immunize.org/catg.d/pict001.htm
Be sure to scroll down to the thumbnail images and click on the "live labels" next to them
to view at different sizes!
The images are also available as a "Slide Set of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases." The
Slide Set contains eight more
images than the Photo Notebook. To assist you with slide presentations, an English-language script comes with the
Slide Set. A Spanish-language script is also available
upon request. (The Spanish-language translation was generously provided to IAC by the Puerto Rico Immunization
Program.)
To order a Slide Set online (item S3010, $25 each), go to:
http://www.immunize.org/slideset/
To view the English-language script, go to:

SEE IAC'S TWO NEW WEB PAGES: "IMMUNIZATION EXEMPTION ISSUES" AND "BIOTERRORISM INFORMATION"
IAC'S new "Immunization Exemption Issues" page contains links (and bibliographic
references) to recent journal
articles about state exemption laws and their effects. The most recent article is titled "Processes for Obtaining
Nonmedical Exemptions to State Immunization Laws"
(American Journal of Public Health, April 2001). This article examines the impact of the amount of effort
required to claim a nonmedical exemption.
To see the new "Immunization Exemption Issues" page on IAC's website, go to:
http://www.immunize.org/exemptions
The "Bioterrorism Information" page contains numerous references and links to journal
articles and CDC and other websites pertaining to bioterrorism in general and to
smallpox and anthrax in particular.
Of special note is a link to archived broadcasts from CDC's Public Health Emergency
Preparedness and Response
Program. These broadcasts were held in November and December of 2001 and covered clinical diagnosis of anthrax
and smallpox and risk communication. To watch the
broadcasts online, go to:
