A COUPLE OF CLICKS AND YOU'LL BE PREPARED FOR THE INFLUENZA PANDEMIC SATELLITE BROADCAST

"...Epidemiologists agree that the probability is high that another dangerous new strain of the influenza virus will emerge."  (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

On Thursday, February 25, 1999, CDC will present a live, interactive 2.5-hour satellite course, "Preparing for the Next Influenza Pandemic." The course will be broadcast twice, once from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. eastern time and again from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. eastern time.

After the course, participants will be able to:
    1. Identify the rationale for influenza pandemic preparedness
    2. Identify four components of the guidelines for influenza pandemic
        preparedness
    3. Initiate influenza pandemic preparedness planning

The course will be moderated by William L. Atkinson, MD, MDH, medical epidemiologist, National Immunization Program, CDC.

CDC'S FOUR-PART IMMUNIZATION SATELLITE BROADCAST BEGINS MARCH 25

William L. Atkinson, MD, MPH, will present the popular four-part series, "Epidemiology and Prevention of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases," via live interactive satellite broadcast on March 25, April 1, 8, and 15. All broadcasts will be from 12:00 noon-3:30 p.m. eastern time.

"Dr. Bill," a medical epidemiologist from the National Immunization Program at CDC, is well known not only for his expertise on immunization issues, but also for his clear and engaging presentations. He will be joined for these sessions by Sharon G. Humiston, MD, MPH, also a medical epidemiologist from the National Immunization Program at CDC.

This program will provide the most current information available in the constantly changing field of immunization. The sessions are as follows:

Session One (March 25) will cover principles of vaccination, general recommendations on immunization, and strategies to improve immunization coverage levels.

Session Two (April 1) will cover diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, rotavirus, and polio.

Session Three (April 8) will cover measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella.

Session Four (April 15) will focus on hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b, influenza, and pneumococcal disease.

Continuing education credit will be available for certain groups of health professionals based on 14 hours of instruction.

"EARLY ADOLESCENTS: HOW TO SAVE THEIR LIVES" IS TOPIC OF MARCH 12 SATELLITE BROADCAST

"Early Adolescents: How to Save Their Lives," will be broadcast via live interactive satellite on March 12, 1999 (12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Pacific time). This 1.5-hour course will describe adolescent health risks and behavior, appropriate immunizations, and effective communication techniques.

The program is sponsored by the California Department of Health Services, Kaiser Permanente, and the American Liver Foundation in partnership with the California Medical Association and the California Distance Learning Health Network.

MARCH 15 IS THE "EARLY BIRD" REGISTRATION DEADLINE FOR CDC'S 33RD NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION CONFERENCE

Calling all early birds! The 33rd National Immunization Conference will be held June 22-25, 1999, in Dallas, Texas, and early registration pays! If you register by March 15, your fee is $60. Regular registration is from March 15 until June 7, 1999, at which time the fee is $85. If you register after June 7, the registration fee is $100.

ALL KIDS COUNT REGISTRY CONFERENCE SET FOR APRIL 27-30, 1999

The All Kids Count Immunization Registry Conference will be held in St. Paul, Minnesota, on April 27-30, 1999. This year's conference will emphasize solutions to common barriers affecting broad implementation of immunization registries and integration with larger public health information systems.

The 1999 AKC conference is being co-sponsored by CDC's National Immunization Program Registry Clearinghouse and the Information Network for Public Health Officials (INPHO) project, and the Minnesota Department of Health.
