THE VACCINE INITIATIVE ANNOUNCES A FREE ELECTRONIC
IMMUNIZATION NEWS SERVICE
The Vaccine Initiative announces the availability of "Immunization NewsBriefs,"
a free service that brings immunization news to your computer three days a week. Delivered
via e-mail every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, these news abstracts focus on immunization
efforts, vaccine development, and disease outbreaks throughout the world as reported in
the 1400 news sources that are regularly reviewed.
"Immunization NewsBriefs" is a service of the Vaccine Initiative. To subscribe,

The Vaccine Initiative, a special project of the Infectious Diseases Society of America
and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, is supported by a grant from the Robert
Wood Johnson Foundation and is an independent source of information on immunization and
immunization-related issues for parents, health professionals, legislators, and the media.

JUST PUBLISHED! THE UPDATED AND EXPANDED EDITION OF THE REFERENCE BOOK,
"VACCINES"

CDC RELEASES INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE OF VACCINE INFORMATION STATEMENTS (VISs)
The National Immunization Program of the CDC released a new document on February 23, 1999,
entitled "Instructions for Use of Vaccine Information Materials." The
instructions include information about the law requiring the use of VISs; the effective
date for required use of new materials; current edition dates; interim polio vaccine
materials; and recordkeeping requirements.
These instructions will be available soon from state immunization program managers but you
can download them now from the Immunization Action Coalition's website by clicking here: http://www.immunize.org/vis/

website.

SUBSCRIBE TO PROMED-MAIL TO LEARN ABOUT EMERGING DISEASES AROUND THE WORLD
The Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases (ProMED) was proposed by the Federation of
American Scientists specifically to create a global system of early detection and timely
response to disease outbreaks. ProMED was inaugurated in September 1993, at a Geneva
conference cosponsored by sixty prominent experts in human, animal, and plant health.
The ProMED-mail electronic list-serv reaches participants worldwide including subscribers

NATIONAL TICK-BORNE DISEASE CONFERENCE SET FOR MARCH 7-9
The National Conference on the Prevention and Control of Tick-Borne Diseases will be held
in New York City on March 7-9, 1999. The conference is sponsored by the American Lyme
Disease Foundation, Inc. (ALDF), a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the
public and health professionals about the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and control of
Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections.
The three-day conference will feature 28 presentations by leading experts in tick-borne
diseases, and will cover such topics as risk management, community-based prevention, tick
population control, vaccines, and treatment. The complete conference programand

Bethesda, Maryland. Cosponsors are CDC, the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases,

Evaluation and Research of the Food and Drug Administration, the World Health

CONFERENCE ON NEEDLE-FREE INJECTION TECHNOLOGY SET FOR MARCH 31-APRIL 1
The Conference on Needle-Free Injection Technology will be held in Bethesda, Maryland, on
March 31-April 1, 1999. This conference is sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention, U.S. Agency for International Development, World Health Organization, PATH
(Program for Appropriate Technology in Health), and ANFIM (Association of
Needle-Free Injection Manufacturers). The stated purpose of the meeting is to: "Bring
together public and private sector agencies, organizations, and companies working to
overcome the drawbacks of administering vaccines and other medicaments with conventional
needle and syringe."
