CDC RELEASES ANNUAL ACIP STATEMENT ON INFLUENZA PREVENTION
AND CONTROL

On May 1, 1998, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices released its updated statement, "Prevention and Control of  Influenza," for the 1998-99 influenza season. This statement, published every spring in the MMWR, reviews recommendations for the use of influenza vaccine such as which children and adults should be given influenza vaccine, when it should be administered, who needs more than one dose, vaccine side effects, antiviral treatment for influenza, etc. Click here http://www2.cdc.gov/mmwr/
to access the updated recommendations on MMWR's website, or call your state's immunization program manager to obtain a copy.

Click here http://www.immunize.org/nslt.d/n18/coord18.htm if you need your immunization program manager's phone number.

CDC RELEASES "HEPATITIS B VACCINE FACT SHEET" AND "HEPATITIS
B VACCINE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS"

On April 27, 1998, ABC News affiliates in several U.S. cities aired a story that raised concerns about hepatitis B vaccine causing chronic illnesses (such as multiple sclerosis,
autoimmune disorders). As a result, CDC has developed a fact sheet called "Hepatitis B vaccine: what you may have heard...and what you should know," for distribution to the public. You may obtain a copy from CDC's National Immunization Program website by clicking here: http://www.cdc.gov/nip/.   In addition, "Hepatitis B vaccine questions and answers" provides more extensive information about hepatitis B vaccine. It may be obtained from CDC's Hepatitis Branch website by clicking here: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/hepatitis/b/faqb.htm.

IT'S BAD ENOUGH TO LOSE A SPLEEN!

If you were at CDC/HCFA's National Adult Immunization Conference in March, chances are you walked away with a vivid memory of the picture of the woman who needed to have her legs and arms amputated.  She developed overwhelming pneumococcal infection. Not one of the several physicians who took care of her in the years following her emergency splenectomy had vaccinated her against pneumococcal disease.
