IAC's Video of the Week outlines steps the public can take to protect against
influenza
IAC encourages IAC Express readers to watch "Know
Your Flu
Facts," a 30-second video clip that lists influenza
symptoms, suggests ways to prevent spreading or contracting
influenza, and promotes influenza vaccination. The video is
sponsored by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases
(NFID).
The video will be available on the home page of IAC's
website through March 6. To access it, go to:

Spotlight on immunize.org: Unprotected People Reports provide more than 100
vaccine-preventable disease accounts
Are you searching for compelling reports and
stories about
people with vaccine-preventable diseases as a way to educate
staff and patients about the importance of immunization?
Look no further. For years, IAC has published Unprotected
People Reports, real-life accounts of people who have
suffered or died from vaccine-preventable diseases. The
Unprotected People Report web section provides access to
more than 100 personal testimonies, remembrances, case
reports, and newspaper articles, as well as to opinion
pieces about the value of immunization. To access the

The main page offers links to the reports organized by
disease, and also offers similar resources from our
immunization partners such as AAP, California Immunization

Free "Shots 2011" software for mobile devices is now available for the new
adult and child, teen, and catch-up immunization schedules
The "Shots 2011" quick-reference guides to the
adult
immunization schedule and the child, teen, and catch-up
immunization schedules are now available for Palm-OS
handhelds, Pocket-PC handhelds, iPhones and iPods (on iTunes
store), and Android devices. All are available on the
website of the Group on Immunization Education of the
Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

WHO recommends influenza vaccine composition for the 2011-12 northern
hemisphere influenza season
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently
announced the
viruses it recommends for use in influenza vaccines in the
2011-12 northern hemisphere influenza season. The
announcement is reprinted below.
It is recommended that vaccines for use in the 2011-2012
influenza season (northern hemisphere) contain the
following:
- an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus;
- an A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2)-like virus;
- a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus.

Influenza is present in all 50 states, so please keep vaccinating!
According to MMWR (2/18/11), influenza is
currently present
in all 50 states, and activity is widespread in
approximately 75 percent of states. Influenza vaccination is
recommended for everyone age 6 months and older, so please
keep vaccinating your patients.
If you don't have influenza vaccine, you can direct patients
to the Google Flu Vaccine Finder. It helps the public find
nearby locations where influenza vaccine is available. It's
as simple as entering a zip code. Visit the Google Flu

Award-winning DVD! "Immunization Techniques: Best Practices with Infants,
Children, and Adults"--from the California Department of Public Health,
Immunization Branch
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH),
Immunization Branch, has updated its award-winning training
video, "Immunization Techniques: Best Practices with
Infants, Children, and Adults." The 25-minute program can be
used to train new employees and to refresh the skills of
experienced staff. The video demonstrates the skills and
techniques needed to administer vaccines to patients of all
ages. It includes instruction on the following:

Selecting, preparing, and administering injectable, oral,
and nasal vaccines

Documenting immunizations
-
Making patients comfortable and educating them
-
Facilitating staff and patient communication
Prices start at $17 each for 1-9 copies and are greatly
reduced for large orders, dropping to $3 each for 1,000-1,499 copies.
