OFFICIAL RELEASES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CDC has vaccination information for travelers to the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games On May 23, CDC posted Announcement—London 2012: Olympic and Paralympic Games on its Travelers' Health web section. The announcement advises U.S. travelers to the 2012 Olympic Games (July 29–August 12) and 2012 Paralympic Games (August 29–September 9) to plan ahead while in the U.S. and to take precautions after arriving in London. Heading the list of CDC travel tips is this advice on vaccination: Make sure you are up to date on your routine vaccines. Most people get these before they start school. The vaccine that protects against measles is especially important. There’s a large measles outbreak in Europe, and a lot of unvaccinated American travelers were infected with measles in 2011. The announcement includes many other travel tips and links to useful travel websites. Back to top FEATURED RESOURCES CDC's new website for parents has solid information on child/teen vaccines and the diseases they prevent Based on research and feedback from parent focus groups, CDC's new website for parents provides both quick answers and in-depth information about childhood and adolescent vaccines and the diseases they prevent. Parents report that their children’s doctors and nurses are their most trusted sources of vaccine information, yet parents are also going online for vaccination information. CDC would like healthcare providers to explore the new website and then encourage parents and patients to use it to get vaccine information. Back to top CDC offers easy-to-read, easy-to-scan immunization schedules for children, preteens/teens, and adults CDC has posted three easy-to-read, easy-to-scan immunization schedules, one for children (age 0–6 years), one for preteens/teens (age 7–18 years), and one for adults (age 19 years and older). The schedules in the easy-to-read series are intended for the use of parents and patients. Each schedule shows the vaccines needed by each age group. The back side of the child schedule presents a chart of each childhood vaccine-preventable disease, the vaccine that prevents it, route of disease transmission, and disease symptoms and complications. The back sides of the preteen/teen and adult schedules present a concise review of vaccine-preventable diseases and the vaccines that prevent them. Back to top JOURNAL ARTICLES AND NEWSLETTERS May issue of CDC's Immunization Works newsletter now available CDC recently released the May issue of its monthly newsletter Immunization Works and posted it on the website of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD). The newsletter is provided to national healthcare provider and consumer groups for distribution to their members and constituencies. The immunization information provided is non-proprietary and is encouraged to be widely disseminated and shared. The May issue includes information about what has been going on in immunization in the past month. Much of it has already been covered in previous issues of IAC Express. Back to top CONFERENCES AND MEETINGS Minutes of the February 2012 ACIP meeting now online The CDC website recently posted the minutes of ACIP's February 2012 meeting. In addition, extensive meeting information is available—including details on past and upcoming ACIP meetings, meeting dates, registration, draft agendas, minutes, live archives, and presentation slides. Back to top Presentations from National Adult Immunization Summit and National Influenza Vaccine Summit now online CDC announced that the presentations made at the first National Adult Immunization Summit (NAIS) and twelfth National Influenza Vaccine Summit (NIVS) are now online. Both meetings were held in Atlanta, NAIS on May 15–16, and NIVS on May 16–17. Co-hosted by AMA, CDC, and the National Vaccine Program Office (NVPO), NAIS is charged with increasing immunization rates and reducing vaccine-preventable diseases by identifying specific actions that will lead to increased vaccine coverage in adults. The first NAIS involved more than 130 organizations, all of which have an interest in improving protection against vaccine-preventable diseases among adults. NIVS was established in 2000 under the co-sponsorship of AMA and CDC. Dedicated to addressing and resolving influenza and influenza vaccine issues, it currently includes more than 400 partners representing more than 100 public and private organizations. Back to top  |
