New Jersey becomes first state to require influenza vaccination for children
in day care and preschool settings
On December 14, the New Jersey health
commissioner approved an
amendment to the state's immunization rules that will require
children attending licensed day care and preschool facilities to
receive annual influenza vaccination. The rule, which goes into
effect in September 2008, makes New Jersey the first state in
the nation to require influenza vaccination for day care and
preschool attendance. It was one of a series of amendments that
the health commissioner, Fred M. Jacobs, MD, JD, approved
regarding additional immunizations required for school
attendance in the state.
A press release, issued by the New Jersey Department of Health
and Senior Services, quotes Dr. Jacobs: "The amendments to the
rules governing immunizations will have a direct impact on
reducing illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths in one of New
Jersey's most vulnerable populations--our children. Vaccinations
have proven to be one of the most effective and safe forms of
disease prevention."

IAC mourns the death of immunization advocate Rebecca Cole, who lost a child
to complications from varicella
On November 21, immunization advocate Rebecca
Cole died of
undisclosed causes. Deborah Wexler, MD, IAC's executive
director, wrote the following tribute in Rebecca's Guest Book in
the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
We can take solace in the tremendous legacy of advocacy Rebecca
left us. She did so much good work in the world---letting
parents know about the importance of vaccinating their children
against chickenpox, the deadly disease that took the life of her
son Christopher at age 12 years.
Rebecca devoted herself to getting the chickenpox vaccine
licensed, and to improving FDA labeling for drugs. She appeared
on television programs, videos, and websites, sharing
Christopher's story, as well as publishing a book in 2002 titled
"My Little Drummer Boy" about Christopher's severe illness with
chickenpox, the disease's terrible complications, and his tragic
death from what is now a vaccine-preventable disease.
Rebecca contributed so much to the lives of children and parents
around the world. We will miss you and remember your great
contributions, Rebecca. Thank you for everything you've done.
